JOCHEN VOGEL

The harp requires a player who is aware of its magic. The old Irish Bards, had to pass a test to prove they had mastered the magic of the music and instrument before being allowed to be called Bards or masters. Jochen Vogel passed this test with flying colors. He plays a replica of the "Sirr-Harp", an Irish metal harp dating back to the 1700's. The proper Gaelic term for this instrument is called "Cláirseach" (pronounced Klar-schach). The "Cláirseach" was known in Ireland and Scotland during the 12th century as the court instrument, and remained the dominant and common type of harp in these countries until the 19th century. As a result of changes in society, the instrument slowly began to loose it's popularity in the 17th century and crossed over from the typical court instrument to an instrument used for travelling musicians. The last well-known harp player who played the "Cláirseach" in the traditional old-fashioned way died in the early19th century. The instrument fell into oblivion for nearly 200 years until its recent renaissance into the music world.

Supple harp sounds and a refined playing technique characterize the work of Jochen Vogel. The "Cláirseach" differs from the classical harp because it is strung with bronze chords. This creates a more brilliant sound. In addition, the single tones sustain a much longer sound, resulting in rich overtones that are unrivalled in their fineness. The long resonance of the tone allows for refined distinctions between the individual notes and even the possibility of bending them. This however requires a highly elaborate damping technique.

"Jochen Vogel is a rarity - a composer of contemporary music for the wire strung harp.

..., Jochen is an extraordinary talent, producing fine melodies and lyrics ... and using a wide range of sounds, rhythms and techniques." (Sounding Strings)
